One of the things it is important to teach children when they are gaining independence is that they can’t assume that people see them in a crosswalk. That sticking out their arm is not enough and that you also need to make sure that the person has stopped. When children start riding bikes and driving cars, you teach them to make eye contact with drivers and to always question whether that person is going to do what they aught to do. That’s because, you can be right (in a crosswalk or have the right of way) and still be hit by someone who is not paying attention. I think it is a good philosophy for lots of areas of life. In relationships, you can be right about something and still be damaged if you pursue it. Or the relationship can be damaged. Although it can be one of the hardest things to do, giving up on being right because of the consequences of insisting you are right is one of the most important things we can learn.
